Why Learn Hebrew?

static block photo

The modern Hebrew language has roots that stretch back over 10,000 years, making it one of the oldest languages in the world. Present-day Hebrew exists due in large part to a linguistic revival in the 1800s. Considered a Northwest Semitic language (the other is Aramaic), Hebrew has a rich linguistic and liturgical history. It’s the official language of Israel and is an official minority language in Poland, Turkey, and South Africa. The modern Jewish diaspora has placed Hebrew speakers far away from the Levant; nearly a quarter-million people in the United States speak the language. Hebrew is regulated by the Academy of the Hebrew Language.

Maybe you’ve stumbled across a relative in Israel. Perhaps you’re planning a trip to the Holy Land. Or you might have to learn Hebrew as part of your employment. Whatever your reason, Pimsleur puts you on track to take Hebrew courses and learn the language as it was intended. Common Questions About Learning Hebrew

Is Hebrew a difficult language to learn?

It’s not difficult to learn Hebrew with Pimsleur. While traditional and other language learning techniques are textbook-reliant and involve boring grammar exercises, we take a different approach when learning Hebrew. The Pimsleur Method utilizes your natural oral (speaking) and aural (listening) skills, so you’ll learn to speak Hebrew like a child – naturally! Native English speakers will experience some challenges with Hebrew language learning, but with Pimsleur, any obstacles are quickly turned into enlightening opportunities.

How long does it take to learn Hebrew?

Go the traditional route, and it could take months to learn the Hebrew language. That’s not the case with Pimsleur – in fact, you’ll be able to speak basic phrases and words after your first lesson. Learning is simple and straightforward, thanks to our helpful Hebrew courses like Lightbulb Moments, Speak Easy Challenges, Digital Flash Cards, and more. Our goal is to enhance your Hebrew language learning so you’ll eventually speak the language conversationally. Just bring some curiosity and minimal time commitment – many of our customers learn Hebrew in 30 minutes per day – and we’ll help you reach that goal!

What are the main challenges when learning Hebrew language?

Hebrew words are distinguished by the frequent use of what’s known as triliteral roots – that is, roots that have three consecutive consonants. Prefixes are also commonly used, changing the meaning and context of words. Plus, definite article insertion can create composite words, which you’ll acquire once you’ve nailed down some of the core Hebrew vocabulary. Our Hebrew lessons account for all the unique syntax, grammar, and phonology of the language, so you’ll learn Hebrew with complete confidence.

How important is pronunciation in learning Hebrew?

Pronunciation is one of the most important parts of learning to speak Hebrew correctly. The vowel–consonant array in the Hebrew language varies a bit, unlike English, which has an established number of each. As you’re learning Hebrew, you’ll use anywhere from 25-27 consonants and 5-10 vowels. What’s more, pronunciation is critical with lexical stress within the language – that is, emphasizing either the final or penultimate word syllables. That’s a lot to learn, but you’ll excel with your Hebrew language learning thanks to our Voice Coach with AI pronunciation feedback tool.

Are the Hebrew lessons suitable for complete beginners?

If your Hebrew knowledge is non-existent, no worries! You can learn Hebrew with Pimsleur from the starting blocks. Our Hebrew lessons are designed with the novice in mind – after all, Pimsleur helps people learn to speak Hebrew as a child would! Even if you know a little bit of the language, you can start with our intermediate or advanced Hebrew courses.
