Spanish Lessons on YouTube – Why You Should Augment Your Language Learning
Ah, YouTube… we use it every day to find guidance, the newest music, and even a few laughs.
But YouTube has another feature that we desperately need to incorporate into our everyday routines – especially now that most of the world is on lockdown – and that is YouTube as a language learning resource!
Want to find tutorials to augment your Spanish learning on YouTube?
Whether it’s beginner or intermediate Spanish, formal or informal conversations, Spanish grammar lessons, or slang, YouTube has it all!
In this article, we will go over:
- Why you should augment your Spanish learning using YouTube
- The top Spanish YouTube channels to look out for in 2021
Top 4 Reasons to Use YouTube to Learn Spanish
While YouTube really won’t replace traditional teaching methods like Pimsleur, you should absolutely add it to your toolbox. Here are the top four reasons you should use lessons on YouTube to fine-tune your Spanish skills.
1. It’s Free!
Spanish learning on YouTube has never been easier… or cheaper! Lucky for us, there are so many language-learning channels out there looking to add value by providing free content. Try out several to see what resonates with you.
2. Language Learning Through Storytelling Really Works
In a study by 3M, the corporation behind Post-it Notes, they found that our brains process images insanely faster than text– around 60,000 times faster, to be exact. If storytelling is better than narrative-less texts, and images enhance storytelling then YouTube is a far more powerful tool than we once thought.
3. Native Spanish Speakers on YouTube Teach What Grammar Books Cannot
That’s right… YouTubers are allowed to swear during their lessons and let you in on all the local secrets that traditional teachers cannot. They tell you how it really is- what slang is cool vs. what is outdated, and what people REALLY think and feel from their culture, not just what is romanticized.
Bonus Tip: Check out YouTubers from different Spanish-speaking countries to diversify your Spanish slang words!
4. Learning Spanish on YouTube is Convenient
Powerful Spanish lessons on YouTube are just a click away whenever you have some free time. You can come and go as you please, no strings attached.
The only thing you can’t do with YouTube is to watch videos while going for a jog, or doing the dishes. Pimsleur lessons are the perfect company when you’re on the move. If you’re curious about the Pimsleur app and language lessons, follow along with Molly, one of our favorite blog writers, as she embarks on her Spanish language journey.
Best YouTube Channels to Learn Spanish
In this section, we’ll go over the top Spanish-language YouTube channels to look out for this year.
1. Español con María
Maria is a bubbly, light-hearted Spanish teacher from Bucaramanga, Colombia. She has hundreds of videos for all levels of Spanish.
Not only does she offer answers to your tricky grammar questions, but she also shares interactive videos like the one where she walks you through her closet to learn the different articles of clothing. You can also catch videos of her jet-setting to different cities in Latin America to experience Spanish from a cultural perspective.
The best part? The majority of her videos are taught in Spanish, which will dramatically increase your progress.
2. Butterfly Spanish
Ana, the adorable teacher of Butterfly Spanish, shoots a series of 15-45 minute videos with all of the grammar, vocabulary, and syntax fundamentals you need to form a solid foundation of the Spanish language.
In addition to breaking down the basics, she also teaches about the main differences between Mexican, Latin American, and Castilian Spanish, and always offers lists of different ways to say everyday expressions.
Her videos are taught in English and set in a classroom-lecture style, but she always keeps things interesting with her upbeat personality and the occasional comedic relief!
3. Spanish Pod 101
Spanish Pod 101 is a great resource, especially for those looking to improve listening skills through extended dialogues. With videos from 10 minutes up to two hours, Spanish Pod 101 uses both male and female narrators from different Spanish-speaking countries to create useful dialogues with everyday conversations to fine-tune your listening skills. They even throw in comprehensive questions for you to follow along.
With topics such as “100 Phrases You Must Know in Spanish” to “100 Common Words in Context”, you’ll find months’ worth of free valuable material with a great user experience.
Here’s the catch- There are many different teachers on this channel, so if you prefer to follow the narrative and personality of just one, I would go with Ana or Maria above!
4. Tu Escuela de Espanol
Elena is a decorated Spanish teacher from Spain, so her videos are great for those looking to train their Castilian Spanish accents. Elena offers beautifully animated videos for beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels to facilitate the visual part of vocabulary learning.
