In Levels 1-4, Reading lessons introduce you to Hanyu Pinyin (pinyin for short), the phonetic system for transcribing Chinese characters into a Latin alphabet. In the Readings for Level 5, you'll begin connecting the words you've learned to Hanzi, the characters used in the Chinese written system.

Over 60 years ago, Dr. Paul Pimsleur developed a method that transformed language learning. Since then, millions have used this system to begin to speak and understand a new language quickly. You can too.

The Mandarin Chinese Language

Over one billion people speak Chinese. The two most common dialects are Mandarin and Cantonese. They are not mutually intelligible. Mandarin is the official language in Mainland China, Taiwan, and Singapore. The Mandarin dialect is used in most Chinese schools, and in most TV programs, movies, and radio stations throughout the country, even in Guangzhou (formerly Canton), where people speak Cantonese in their daily lives. Mandarin is one of the six official languages of the United Nations.
